Quantum mechanical study of solid solution effects on dislocation nucleation during nanoindentation

چکیده
A multiscale quasicontinuum density functional theory method is used to study the solid solution effect on dislocation nucleation during nanoindentation. Specifically, an Al thin film with Mg impurities is considered. We find that the solid solution effect depends sensitively on the local configuration of the impurities. Although a random distribution of the impurities increases the hardness of the material, linear distributions of the impurities actually lower the hardness. In both cases, the strengthening/softening effects are due to dislocation nucleation. Consistent with recent experiments, the change of the ideal strength is found to be small. Different incipient plasticity behaviors are observed: in the pure material, two full dislocations are nucleated under the indentor. For a random distribution of impurities, two partial dislocations are formed instead. For linear distributions of impurities, only one partial dislocation is formed. Thus the nucleation of dislocations is sensitive to the local distribution of impurities in an alloy. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

Simulating nanoindentation and predicting dislocation nucleation using interatomic potential finite element method
Dislocation nucleation is central to our understanding of the onset of plasticity during nanoindentation. The shear stress in small volumes beneath the nanoindenter can achieve the theoretical limit of a perfect crystal. The ensuing nonlinear elastic instability can trigger homogenous dislocation nucleation inside the crystal. Here we employ the interatomic potential finite element method to si...

Nanoindentation-induced multiple pop-ins were observed in the load-displacement curves when the mechanical responses of AlN films grown on c-plane sapphire substrates were investigated by using Berkovich indenters. No evidence of phase transformation is revealed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) and selected area diffraction (SAD) analyses. Instead XTEM observations sug...

Nanoindentation has proved to be a technique capable of elucidating the mechanical properties of solid surfaces. Along with recent studies [1,2], our investigation deals with the initial stages of plastic deformation in a solid. In previous works [3,4] we have recognized and characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) the generation around a nanoindentation trace in Au(001) of two type...

We introduce the orbital-free density functional theory local quasi-continuum (OFDFT-LQC) method: a first-principles-based multiscale material model that embeds OFDFT unit cells at the subgrid level of a finite element computation. Although this method cannot address intermediate length scales such as grain boundary evolution or microtexture, it is well suited to study material phenomena such a...

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to study crystalline plasticity during nanoindentation by comparing the elastic-plastic response of three copper substrates with surfaces (001), (110), and (111) crystallographic planes. The effects of elastic anisotropy and crystallographic symmetry on the reduced modulus, dislocation nucleation, and subsequent microstructure evolution, are inv...
